Same-Sex Marriage Bill Passed - Some Do Not Agree

On July 19, 2022, the U.S. House passed a bill that makes all states redefine marriage to include same-sex marriages. All 220 House Democrats voted yay for the bill to be passed, and 47 House Republicans voted yay along with them. The remaining 157 House Republicans voted nay against the bill.

"Imagine telling the next generation of Americans, my generation, we no longer have the right to marry who we love. Congress can't allow that to happen." - Rep. Mondaire Jones, D-NY.

Representative Mondaire Jones, a Democratic representative of New York, only admitted he was gay, stating, "For me, this is personal." One of the Republican representatives of South Carolina, Nancy Mace, who voted yay, said, "If gay couples want to be as happily or miserably married as straight couples, more power to them."

Republican representative Bob Good said, "I believe in God's definition of marriage as between one man and one woman, and that the Obergefell decision wrongly denied states the right to regulate marriage under the 10th Amendment." Republican Representative Morgan Griffith gave a statement to WSET-TV that read, "The Supreme Court's Dobbs decision did not change the status of marriage in our country. This bill is unnecessary, did not go through the committee process as it was rushed to the floor, and was written without Republican input. It is an attempt at distraction by Speaker Pelosi from the burdens carried by families thanks to one-party Democrat rule."
