Texas Buses Illegal Immigrants To Chicago - How Are They Received?

Between August 31 and September 1, 2022, Chicago received 75 "migrants" bused from Texas. One video by CBS Chicago showed one of these migrants explaining that after crossing the border from Mexico into Texas, he was told to go on a bus to Chicago, where someone would be waiting for him. NBC Chicago has reported this story, claiming that it is racist.

Texas Governor Greg Abbott has responded to the backlash, saying, "Mayor Lightfoot loves to tout the responsibility of her city to welcome all regardless of legal status, and I look forward to seeing this responsibility in action as these migrants receive resources from a sanctuary city with the capacity to serve them."

Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot has responded to the bussing, saying, "Chicago is a welcoming city and as such has collaborated across various departments and agencies to ensure we greeted them with dignity and respect. We understand that many are fleeing violent, traumatic, or otherwise unstable environments. We will respond with essential services while these individuals navigate the next steps of their journey, and our community partners have been working diligently to provide a safety net."

This entire project has cost Texas an estimated $12 million. Supporters of Abbott's actions say that President Joe Biden should be taking action on the border crisis, saying that Gov. Abbott is taking action when the President is not.

The actions of Texas on bussing migrants to other states and cities have been received varyingly.
